Attendance to our meetings through the
__rendered_path__25
summer has been variable with numbers
unfortunately down. We continue with our
help desk on the mornings of our meetings
and we hope attendances will slowly
increase. Our meetings included a very
interesting presentation about the Border
Reivers and an equally interesting visit to the
Portico Library in Manchester.
We have completed the upgrading of our
Scottish Marriage Index webpage. Those
searching are now presented with a much
more friendly presentation of results and for
contributors there is a new page where data
can be input, to be approved by an
administrator before inclusion in the
database. Whilst we would encourage
contributors to use this method, data can still
be sent to smi@mlfhs.org.uk. You can

__rendered_path__60
We are looking forward to the imminent visit
by Dr. Laura Stewart to speak about The
Scottish Covenant and its effect on politics.
Future meetings for the winter season will
cover aspects of using the revised
ScotlandsPeople website, and the use of DNA
in family history as well as our social
gathering in January and members talking
about their family heirlooms.

ASGRA
__rendered_path__22
__rendered_path__22
ASGRA enjoyed hosting this year’s annual
__rendered_path__141
SAFHS conference in Fife and judging from
the favourable comments received from
colleagues, stallholders and members of the
public, it was a great success. We were
particularly pleased to welcome members of
Accredited Genealogists Ireland, our alliance
partners, with whom we are developing a
strong relationship. In December ASGRA
Chairman Janet Bishop will be attending their
AGM in Dublin and council member Val
Wilson will be speaking on behalf of the
Association at their CPD event in February
2017, also in Dublin. A particular noteworthy
innovation was the talks provided for the
general public.
These were a sell-out and covered diverse
topics from Medicine and Morality, Gordon
Bennett and Using English Records to
Research Your Irish Ancestors. During the
lunch break Strathclyde students gave short
presentations about their recent work in
genealogical studies.
ASGRA’s annual visit and social event this
year is to the Moving Image Archive at Kelvin
Hall, Glasgow and is being arranged by Linda
Kerr. The Moving Image Archive has been
part of the National Library of Scotland’s
collections since 2007 and recently moved
into a purpose-built facility and is an often-
overlooked resource for family history.
The next ASGRA continuing professional
development day will take place on 3
November in the Dome Seminar Facility in
New Register House Edinburgh.

Entitled
Preparation
for
Professional
Development, it forms part of a recruitment
drive to attract new members. Anyone who
is, or aspires to be, a professional genealogist
or researcher in archives and who might be
interested will find further details on our
website.
The membership application fee will now rise
to £25.00, in line with comparable
associations,
to
reflect
increased
administrative overheads as well as the cost
of the badge and certificate when joining. In
conjunction with this the assessors are
currently
revising
ASGRA
entrance
requirements for holders of the PG Diplomas
awarded by the Universities of Strathclyde
and Dundee. The new requirements will be
on the website as soon as they are ready,
along with the new Transcription Guidelines.

Finally, ASGRA has just commissioned a
splendid blue and silver lapel badge based on
our coat of arms, which is now available for
all members to use.

In May Merran Gunn, creative events advisor
to the Board of Trustees for The Dunbeath
Preservation Trust and also a part time
volunteer with The Dunbeath Heritage
Museum, gave an interesting talk to CFHS
members about some of the changes that
have been made, are being made, and are in
the pipeline for The Dunbeath Heritage
Museum.
At our meeting in June, Alan Sinclair, through
an illustrated talk, described the ancient
history and geology of the diverse and
contrasting counties of Caithness and
Sutherland and explained the Viking influence
upon the place names and dialect of the
area.
At our September meeting Roy Mackenzie
talked about the “The Veterans’ Memorial”
overlooking Wick Bay, which has fallen into
disrepair. He has been a key figure in
ensuring its restoration. He described the
involvement of the Royal British Legion in
securing funding and he also talked about the
involvement of pupils and teachers from Wick
High School who have researched the history
of the veterans. The aim is to return the
monument to its former glory.

Bothwellhaugh – A Lanarkshire Mining
Community 1884 - 1965. This is a local
history book first published in 1986, the
society worked with author Robert Duncan
and the Bothwellhaugh Past Residents Group
to get the book re-typed, updated and back in
print.
Calderbank – An Industrial and Social
History – Is another of Robert Duncan’s
books that was out of print. We have re-
typed and Mr Duncan has updated the
information and the book is now available
again.
Newarthill Local History Group produced
7 volumes of local history during the years
1993-2002. The books have been out of print
and are constantly being requested by people
wishing to purchase copies. We now have the
first three volumes back in print; the others
will follow later this year.
The latest books in our Military Groups
WW1Fallen series is: - Lanarkshire Fallen at
the Battle of Arras 1917” and Lanarkshire
Fallen at the Battle of Passchendaele
1917”.
School Books this series is proving very
popular. When researching ancestors, school
registers can tell you when families moved into
the area and, if they left, where they moved
to. Society member Robert Earl continues with
the transcription of school Registers and Log
Books, his latest books completed are: -

events. Of course the library has a number
of publications and a collection of maps
covering Scotland and Northern England. The
Society strives to keep all its members
interested and we have access to the
library`s computers and the Internet.
Many members have volunteered in projects,
e.g. indexing of burial registers as well as
their own interests or just helping others with
their research. There are many more details
about the Society, which you will find on our

Three areas of research into the Parish of St.
Andrews Lhanbryde, Moray all in one book!
Lhanbryde War Memorial – This details all the
men commemorated on the war memorial
from World War I and II. Information
includes awards of medals, place of burial
and newspaper extracts.
Lhanbryde Poor Register 1845-1905 which is
a transcription of the Register for each
pauper who was accepted to be given Poor
Relief under The Poor Law Act of 1845. They
note in detail the change in circumstances of
the person named and sometimes their
family’s circumstances, including any increase
or decrease of relief given, occasionally entry
into the poorhouse and often their date of
death. They give a unique glimpse of the
social attitudes to the poor in Victorian
Morayshire, though it was not always paupers
who got relief, sometimes it was those who
were sick or out of work.
Lhanbryde Burial Register 1895-1954 is a
register of burials in the Parish a vastly
interesting document especially for those
tracing their family history in particular for
those persons who died outwith the Parish.
This work by the Moray & Nairn Family
History Society follows on from the work
undertaken on the War Memorials of Alves
and Forres and for the Poor Registers for the
Parishes of Alves, Bellie and of Elgin. The
book is available from Moray & Nairn FHS at
only £8, p&p extra.
Forres Free Church Births & Baptisms
1870-1914
An interesting insight to the church and its
congregation in the late Victorian period and
the cross-section of those having their
children baptised in the church of Forres.
This work by the Moray & Nairn Family
History Society follows on from the work
undertaken on the Church Registers for
Kinloss and Burghead. The book is shortly to
be available from Moray & Nairn FHS.

In November, we joined with the Largs
Historical Society, who hosted the annual
Joint Meeting, where Dr. S. Morrison gave a
very interesting illustrated talk on ‘People’s
Histories: Exploring oral history in the
community.
This was followed in December by the
Christmas Social the speaker being Val Reilly,
whose talk ‘To Honour the Angels: the story
of the Christmas Carol’, explained the origins
of well-known Christmas carols. This was
followed by an enjoyable supper provided by
the committee.
One of our members, John Riddell, began the
new session by telling us of his investigations
into the life of George Nixon Duck, who was
a notable Fairlie resident at the time of the
building of the Fairlie Tunnel and whether it
had a part in his downfall.
February brought Tom Barclay from the
Carnegie Library in Ayr giving the details of
the beginnings of the Library and its
resources. A visit is planned for 27th. April, to
allow members to see behind the scenes, and
if any of the resources would be helpful to
them.
The annual Joint Meeting of the three family
history societies in Ayrshire, and hosted by
E.A.F.H.S. will be held on Thursday 9th March
in the Johnnie Walker Bond, in Strand Street,
Kilmarnock. The speaker will be Dr. I.
O’Brien from the Mitchell Library, Glasgow
and her topic will be - ‘The Heritage of the
Clyde’. A treat in store.
At our March meeting, J. O Neill will be telling

us about the ‘Fenwick Weavers’. A topic of
interest to members with weavers and
Fenwick Weavers in their ancestry.
This will be followed on the 11th. April, when
we shall learn in a talk given by Dr. I
Matheson,
titled-’The
Union
of
the
Parliaments,’ of the various events that led
up to this dramatic event.
On the 9th May, our year will end with the
A.G.M. possibly a quiz and a light supper.
Through some grant aid, the society has had
the IGI for 1981 digitised and is now
available to all. It is easy to use and anyone
can take away information specific to their
area of interest to work on at home. It is
hoped to extend this in future.
All meetings are held in the evening on the
second Tuesday of the month, in the
Community Room, in Largs Library and begin
at 7-30pm., unless otherwise stated.
The Find your ain Folks workshops are also
held in the Community Room from 2-30-4-

Following the popularity of the Sharing

As usual, the research team worked furiously
to collect, document, collate, check and work
with Museum staff preparing information
panels and leaflets.
The main event in May, held over two days in

the Cunningsburgh Hall, brought visitors from
all parts of the U.K and even from Australia.
Such was the interest that it was an
overflowing hall for the talks and displays
with many relationships discussed and
addresses exchanged. As so much effort had
been put into this event it was decided to
postpone the other chosen surname,
ROBERTSON until June 2018.
The “homing instinct” has brought many
visitors to our office this year, and a welcome
increase in membership – our dedicated
volunteers have been endlessly busy.
Seventy cruise ships have called this year
with an increase to ninety forecast for next
summer - all bringing researchers just for a
day, weather permitting! Equinox gales
mean the end of the cruise season now, but
not the visitors; Shetland Wool Week with
about five hundred delegates attending has
now ended; local winter groups and events
are starting up………and the Shetland F.H.S.

We continue to have our monthly visits to
New Register House on the 3rd Tuesday
evening of each month. These visits are very
well attended by our members and more
often than not our 40 places are taken up.
New members are welcome to attend and our
steadfast members will assist anyone who
needs help with their research.
This year, in support of the 2017 year of
Scottish History, Heritage and Culture, we
held a number of well-attended family history
workshops in nine libraries throughout West
Lothian. A further workshop is planned for
Broxburn Library on Saturday 18th November
from 10.00 am until 12.30 pm. The
workshops provided an introduction to
anyone wishing to look into their family tree
but not knowing where to start and there
were member volunteers of the Society on
hand to assist with on-line searches etc. We
would welcome anyone who wishes to come
along to our final workshop in Broxburn on
18th November to learn about their ancestors.
The Society continues to grow from strength

we continue to have an excellent turnout of
members to all of our meetings and talks.
Our membership remains at £10 for single
members, £15 for a couple from the same

Federation of Family History

Societies
The Federation of Family History
Societies formed over 40 years ago and
now has over 160 member societies around the World. We are an educational charity that uses
our website, social media and other forms of communication to ensure that family history news,
book reviews and guidance are readily available to our member organisations and the general
public.
What do we offer?
Society information: Our website at www.ffhs.org.uk has details of all our societies. Most
__rendered_path__39
focus on a particular geographical area or a specific surname, but there are also a variety
of other specialist organisations.
Directory of Speakers: we keep an up-to-date listing on our website who will travel to
conferences and meetings.
FFHS Newsletter: anyone can sign up for our free bimonthly e-newsletter at
www.ffhs.org.uk. Recent issues are available on our website and cover topics such as DNA,
__rendered_path__39
non-conformist ancestry, wills and tracing Irish ancestry.
Our Really Useful Information Leaflet: a comprehensive guide to how to build a family tree,
which gives many useful websites. The 2017 edition includes an article on using
newspapers in your research.
You can download the leaflet from our website at www.ffhs.org.uk for free. You can also
link to the download from your own websites, newsletters and journal articles. If you would
like to give copies out at fairs or talks, email a request for leaflets to emma@ffhs.org.uk.
__rendered_path__81
We have also recently published a 2017 issue of our Australasian leaflet, which is available
on our website.
Events: we run seminars for our members and also for the general public. Our latest public
seminar was a well-attended conference in London on 30 September, explaining how to go
‘Beyond the Census’. We publicise these events on our home page.
Member events can be found in our Members’ zone, which is password protected.
Additionally, we take stands at fairs around the country, with volunteers from our societies
using these events as an opportunity to talk about family history and attract new members.
Social
media:
we
publicise
news
and
resources
using
Facebook
(www.facebook.com/FederationFHS) and Twitter (@FederationFHS).
Projects: FFHS is involved in a series of projects, encouraging the indexing of records which
would otherwise not be made easily available to family historians. For example, over recent
years FFHS has part-funded four Manorial Documents Register County projects in
conjunction with The National Archives. Wiltshire and Northamptonshire have been
completed, with Northumberland and Kent due to finish in the coming months. Search the
indexes at discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/manor-search.
National Burial Index: transcribed by family history societies, the current edition, known as
NBI3 contains over 18.4 million entries, which have been harvested from some 9,100
locations in 50 counties.
Last, but not least, you can find out about the specific services we offer our member societies,
such as seminars, insurance and legal advice, on the ‘About Us’ section of our website at
www.ffhs.org.uk

Family Search
Image_138_0
FamilySearch Replacing Microfilm with Digital Images
FamilySearch has been working for some time on how best to
make our microfilm collection of family history records more accessible globally. FamilySearch has
now digitally reproduced the bulk of its microfilm collection—over 1.5 billion images so far—
including the most requested collections based on microfilm loan records worldwide. The
remaining microfilms should be digitized by the end of 2020 and all new records from its ongoing
global efforts are already using digital camera equipment. Family historians will now be able to
view images of original documents more easily, for free and with a wider range of records than
ever before.
You can identify the record you want to research on the FamilySearch Catalog, and if available,
immediately access the digitised version of the original microfilm; all for free at your local Family
History Centre or an Affiliate Library. A guide ‘Finding Digital Images of Records on FamilySearch’
is available at: http://broadcast.lds.org/fhd/FH_Find_Digital_Records_A4_WEB.pdf
__rendered_path__50
This advance in accessibility allowed FamilySearch to discontinue its microfilm circulation services
on 8 September 2017. Many of our Centres and Affiliate Libraries will retain their existing
microfilm collections already on loan. Currently, over 1.5 million microfilms have been digitized
including all microfilms borrowed in the last 5 years. Additionally, patrons visiting a Family History
Centre can initiate a request for priority digitisation of a specific record, if not available digitally.
We anticipate that the film digitisation process will be complete by 2020, and that many more
records will be added as we continue to work in partnership with archives around the world.

‘Children's Homes: A History of Institutional Care for
Image_147_0
Britain’s Young’ by Peter Higginbotham
__rendered_path__23
Children's Homes surveys the wide range of institutions that,
over the centuries, were used as a substitute for children's
'natural' homes. As well as charitably funded orphanages, these
included homes run by religious or occupational groups,
institutions for those who had broken the law or otherwise gone
astray, establishments for children with special needs, homes run
by the poor law authorities, and by local councils. This
fascinating and copiously illustrated volume answers questions
such as: Who founded and ran all these institutions? Who paid
for them? Where have they all gone? What was life like for their
inmates? And where can their records be found?
Peter Higginbotham became fascinated by the workhouse when,
while tracing his family history, he discovered that one of his
__rendered_path__46
forebears had died in such an institution. His extensive
